Writing Your Maid of Honor SpeechesIf you don’t know me, my name is Sarah and I created this site to help fellow women like me that have trouble writing speeches and presenting them.

My best friend got married on the California coast (absolutely beautiful!) with me as the maid of honor.  You definitely know how exciting it is to have this honor, but I think we can both agree how stressful it is!  The last thing I wanted to worry about with all of the planning and organizing that was going on was the speech that I would be giving on the big day…

One of my biggest fears of mine is public speaking – I have always had a lot of trouble thinking of what to say in front of people.  It’s just one of those things that makes me nervous and it’s why I’ve always avoided public speaking.  But seeing how I was the maid of honor, I had no choice and I would have to give a speech.

I didn’t even know where to began with the speech.  Do I start with some adventures?  Write how I met her?  Write about old memories of us growing up?  The last thing I wanted to do was write a boring speech that would put everyone to sleep.  And to make matters worse, I didn’t even start writing it until a few days before the wedding!

So I turned to the internet to search for speech writing tips and advice. I assumed that I’d find a few things here and there, but I was surprised when I came across a site that was specifically about teaching people to write and give great wedding speeches. I thought that was pretty cool so I bookmarked the site in case I wanted to return later.

I also spent some time reading various articles and example speeches where ever I could find them.  I remember going to Yahoo and searching for wedding speech examples, maid of honor speeches, wedding speeches, etc.  I pretty much spent the next 3-4 hours reading everything I could!  But there was a problem with this approach.

The first problem was that I pushed the speech to the last few days before the wedding.  What a bad mistake!  I knew that this was going to come back to haunt me, but I wanted to forget about it because of how much I hated public speaking.

The second problem was that I was reading way too much and I still didn’t have a speech in front of me.  You can read all day long but if you don’t do anything about it, then nothing will come of it!  This was a big lesson that I learned from this whole ordeal.

I went back to that website that was specifically developed to help all sorts of people write wedding speeches.  Several authors had teamed up to write several guides for the different types of wedding speeches out there.  I needed help with my maid of honor speech and I needed it now so that’s the section of the website I headed to.

Maid of Honor SpeechesAfter spending some more time reading through some of the tips on the website, I knew that I could trust the author.  I picked up a copy of the guide and went through it right away.  I took pages and pages of notes and I was quite shocked at how easy writing a speech can be when you have a system laid out in front of you.

My maid of honor speech was a little over 5 minutes and it went really well.  I had the audience laughing hysterically at one point!  Big boost of confidence there.  I recommend that you try to keep your wedding speech around the 5 minute mark because people tend to zone out during long speeches.

The best part about this experience is that I have now become a much better speaker.  I don’t have any fear speaking to strangers or in public anymore….and this alone has made my life much better than before.

Thanks for sharing your comments on your biggest fear like public speaking. Me too! That was years ago. I attacked it with a vengeance with groups like Toastmasters. When it came to giving my best man speech, I was taken by surprise because it was so different. Seems like you had the same issues giving your maid of honor speech. LOL!

When you get married, are you going to be ready for your Bride speech?

The best man’s toast is akin to being the center of a football team. He is never noticed unless he drops the ball. It’s game day on the wedding. Don’t drop the ball. Nothing controversial like jokes about old girl friends. The best man is not the quarterback. Don’t out do the groom or the father of the bride. It’s not your day. Yes, you can be clever and funny. Just keep in mind what you want your audience to remember. Should they remember how great of a speech that you delivered, or should they remember funny stories about the bride and groom? Yep-just the bride and groom. You will just be a foot note in history. I learned the tips from using the Best Man Speech guide. Click here to learn more about the best man toast speech.

Thanks for the post, Yest, giving a bride wedding speech, a groom wedding speech or any other type of speech can be a scary ting. The important thing to remember is that everybody is a bit nervous about giving a speech. it is 100% natural.

It’s often the speeches where I get some of my best wedding photos, but if the speaker is nervous or un-prepared, they are not quite so good.

At our wedding the Maid of Honor didn’t actually give a speech.

That was probably a good thing. With a family comprising of various step-fathers; step-mothers; people who love the limelight all wanting to say a few words the wedding could easily have turned into a soap opera!

As it was, after the Bride’s Father, the Groom and the Best Man’s speeches many people were getting restless, especially the children and a food fight with the left over trifle was in imminent danger of breaking out!

Thinking about it, the Maid of Honor standing up and making a speech at that time would certainly have had the men maid-of-honor-speech quieten down and paying attention!

Regardless of what happened at our wedding, I would suggest everyone to take speech writing assistance to deliver a good speech while handling the situation.
