What Is a Wedding Toast?
Wedding Toasts are traditional speeches that either a family member or close friend give during the reception dinner or at a wedding anniversary party. The speech is usually short and is intended to honor the newly wed couple and show love towards the bride and groom.

Who Gives the Toasts?
Anyone can stand up and give a toast. However, the most common individuals to give one are the:
- father of the bride
- the best man
- the maid of honor
- the groom
- the bride
Of course, other individuals can stand up and give a toast, but these 3 members of the wedding almost always will give a toast at one point or another.
What Should I Say?
If you’re going to have to give a wedding speech or a toast, you’re going to spend some time before the special day to write out some key points to talk about.
I am not going to give you specific quotes to say. It’s important that you write your own as it will be genuine and from your heart. This is hugely important.
If you’re a sister or brother of the bride or groom, then think about that past several years and the adventures you two have had together. Think of a fun day you two had together and how the bride or groom impacted your life. Talk about your friendship and the love you share for each other.
If you’re a close friend, then talk about the special times you shared together. The key goal with wedding toasts is to talk about happy times, sad times, and other great things you two did together over time.
Talk about how he or she impacted your life in a positive way. Tell the bride how beautiful she looks on this special day and how proud you are of her. If you’ve already married, then you can give some tips that you may have as well (but don’t spend too much time doing this – no one likes to be told what to do).
How to Write a Wedding Toast
Now that you know what to talk about, you will need to write out an outline. Get yourself a 3×5 note card and start to write down ideas that I mentioned above. You could create a bulleted list like so:
- Trip you two had together (trip to the mountains, beach, Europe, etc.)
- Funny experience you two shared
- An experience that drew you two closer to becoming amazing friends
- Why you have great love and respect for the bride/groom
- Anything else that created deep friendship between you two
Do not write down a wedding toast word for word. You don’t want to be reading from a paper. You want to write down topics that you can glance at and then talk about. This is easily the best way to speech writing and speaking and it’s no different for this.
They can be funny, but you do want to spend some time showing your love for the couple. And if you’re the father of the bride, then you can talk about her growing up and how much she impacted your life as a parent.

Using these kinds of pre-written wedding speeches can be a great resource for people who struggle with putting their thoughts on paper, let alone speaking them out loud in front of a hundred people. They can give you the starting point you need to write your speech with heartfelt sentiments of your very own. Thanks for the resource… I’ll bookmark this page for my readers.
